If you just installed and tried out the new MS Windows Vista on your machine, you just might be planning to get the old MS Windows XP out of your computer because of the new features being offered by Windows Vista satisfies your daily computing needs. The boot loader process bundled with Vista has changed, yes, but the changes are so minor the steps to configure other OS versions installed on your computer are basically similar to that of MS Windows XP.
First, just boot up and choose MS Windows Vista. Afterwards, format the Windows XP partition. The bootloader process of Vista allows you to make necessary changes on the boot operations of your machine without configuring the boot.ini file of the Windows XP OS version installed on your computer.
Next, insert the Vista CD 1 or the Vista DVD in your drive. Reboot your computer afterwards. Finally, choose the repair console option after the setup process has commenced, choose to have access to a DOS prompt, and key in the following:
• bootrec.exe /fixmbr
• bootrec.exe /fixboot
Key in the first command and execute it by pressing the Enter key. This will remove XP from the Vista bootloader. Then, key in the second command in order to ensure that XP has been unloaded from the boot.ini file of Vista. At this point, Windows XP is history!

Here are few techniques that can help speed up your Vista system in minutes ..
1. Disable the Indexing Service ..Indexing services in Windows Vista indexes all the files and folders for faster access. It basically makes search function faster. By default all files are indexed, but you probably won’t need that. It is recommended that you should disable the indexing service on all the items other than the start menu. To speed up Vista, follow these steps:* Select Start and type "index options", without quotations* After the Indexing Options are loaded, click the Modify button.* Then click Show all Locations* A list of locations will be displayed in the form of a tree. Uncheck those folders which you do not want to be indexed. You can also use the Advanced button to specify file types to be indexed, but this part is optional.* Click OK button to finalize.
2. Enable advanced write caching ..Vista comes with built-in support for SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives. By default Vista does not enable write caching. To improve your data retrieval speed you must enable the write caching. Just follow these steps:* Go to the hard drive properties* Select the Policies tab* Select the radio button labeled Optimize for performance.* Check the boxes titled “Enable write caching on the disk” and “Enable Advance Performance”* Click OK button to finish.
3. Speed up Start Menu Search ..The good old MSCONFIG option is available in Vista as well. Lots of crappy programs load at boot time which consume large amount of memory and processor. To tweak follow these steps:* Go to Start>Run or press Windows + R* Type “msconfig” and click OK* The System Configuration dialogue box will be displayed, select the Startup* You will see list of checkboxes, most of them will be checked. Uncheck those ones which are not needed. More unchecked boxes will lead to better performance.* Click OK button to finish this tweaking step.
4. Stop extra services ..There are lots of services that are automatically started by default in Vista. Many such services are of no use for the user. There are services that get automatically added to the list when you install different third party software. They consume lots of RAM and processor. To speed up just follow these steps:* Go to Start>Run and type “msconfig” without quotations.* System Configuration window will be displayed.* Go to the Services tab (middle one)* To be on the safe side check the box “Hide all Microsoft Services”* Now you will have a reduced version of the list, select ones that you feel are unnecessary.* Press OK to finish. There are some Windows Vista’s services that you can disable without any glitch:* Windows Error Reporting* Tablet PC Input Service ( don’t disable if you are using a tablet PC)* Remote Registry* Offline Files* IKE and AuthIP IP Keying Modules* Distributed Link Tracking Client* Computer Browser
5. Disable Network Printer Search ..Disabling network printer search may greatly improve Vista’s performance. When you browse through folders Vista is always looking for network printers. This search ends up in consuming lots of resources. To speed up performance just follow these steps:* While you are in the explorer (My Computer), go to the Tools menu* Select Folder options* Go to the View tab* Uncheck the box named “Automatically search for network printers”After completing this step you would certainly feel the difference.
6. Use ReadyBoost ..

Looking for tools to get the most out of Windows Vista? Here are a few utilities to tweak up Windows Vista.
1. VistaTweaker - VistaTweaker is, as its name says, a reliable, smart and yet easy-to-use Windows Vista tweaking tool. The interface is nice and simple.· Every tweak has its description so the user can see what each one does.· Tweaks are organized into tabs, each tab is subdivided in sections by group boxes. This way it is easy to find the tweak the user is looking for.
2. XdN Tweaker - Tweaking program that supports Vista (and XP/Server 203). It doesn't have tons of tweaking options, but does focus on ones that most users may want to attend to. No installation required (but .NET is for XP/2003). Address areas with Vista UAC, Control Panel, Media Player, Right-Click context options, Files and Folder tweaks, File Associations, Start Menu, IE7, Outlook Express/Windows Mail, Misc. Tools, and System Settings. Pretty handy little utility.
3. Windows Sidebar Styler - Allows some easy fine-tuning of the Windows Sidebar and provides extensions to the Windows Sidebar in Vista. Supports custom styles for resizing and customizing how it integrates with other elements. Still being refined but looks pretty handy.
4. EasyBCD 1.6 - Hard-core NeoSmart tool that is definitely NOT for "average" Vista users. Allows advanced Vista users/tweakers to set up, configure, and tweak the Windows Vista bootloader.
5. TweakUAC - this utility allows folks running under an Administrator-level profile to easily turn off UAC (User Account Control), turn it back on, or keep it running, but suppress the UAC elevation prompt requests.
6. Tweak VI from Totalidea - The basic version is free and additional feature "plugins" can be purchased. It's a nice business model. The Basic version allows you to tweak desktop items, Start menu items, IE, Firefox, hardware settings, system info, virtual desktops, subsystem folders, mousing, and shutdown options.
7. Vispa - This tweak-tool uses a non-install executable and is a bare-bones Vista utility. Run it and you get a long list of check boxes organized by subjects. To apply a setting, activate the checkbox. Pro: simple interface. Con: simple interface. So unless you already know and understand the consequence of your choice, this might not be a utility for Vista noobies.

Guys I found a unique thing. I know many of you must be knowing this but for all those who don't this is pretty interesting.
So here it goes:While scraping someone or replying in a community type any four numbers without space in front of the symbol &# except 0000 and every time a new thing will come out. Not every time because most of the times a symbol like this will come:
✏But if you try different numbers, I am sure you will get many unique ones. For example:Typing this will produce a result like this:Ҽ - Ҽ
Hope you will enjoy this trick. And keep inventing new ones. :)
You can also post the source of some you found in comments.

Analysts said Microsoft probably is keeping tight-lipped about what Windows 7 will look like because at this point, company engineers and executives don’t even know.
“They don’t want to commit because they don’t have a good idea what’s in it,” said Michael Silver, an analyst with Gartner. “We’re three years out, so you can’t really expect that much detail.”
Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, said that with so many people still in the midst of upgrading to the latest client OS, Windows Vista, he’s hesitant to speculate on what might be in the next OS. “We barely know the features of the one we just got,” he said with a laugh.
That said, Cherry is expecting less “earth-shattering” new features than improvements on some of the new ones found in Windows Vista, such as the Bitlocker encryption feature, which is currently hard for the average PC user to navigate.
“You have to partition your hard drive and do a bunch of things, and you can only really today protect one drive, whereas many machines have more than one,” he said.
Cherry also pointed to a common hardware performance problem many users face because of Vista’s “very large footprint.” “It’s one of the things they might want to address — hardware utilization and performance,” he said. “It’s hard to put a big wrapper around that; it just needs to be better.”
One Microsoft executive gave a slight hint about what might turn up in Windows 7 earlier this year at the RSA Conference in San Francisco. Ben Fathi, corporate vice president of development with Microsoft’s Windows Core Operating System Division, said in an interview that a “fundamental piece of enabling technology,” such as a hypervisor or a drastic change in the user interface, would likely turn up in Windows 7.
Fathi also said at RSA in February that Microsoft was in the middle of the planning process for Windows 7’s features and would know more over the next few months, which suggests the company now has a good idea what the OS will look like but is declining to disclose that information.
While both a hypervisor and a new user interface are possibilities for Windows 7, the former is almost a given, Gartner’s Silver said. “It almost has to go” in the OS, he said, describing the technology as “a really thin OS” that manages virtual machines running on the system.
It would behoove Microsoft to put a hypervisor in Windows 7 because it would give them more control over the hardware the OS runs on, something the company would prefer to have, Silver said.
“The hypervisor really owns the hardware, and Microsoft likes owning the hardware, and they want to be one of the people to standardize [hypervisor technology],” he said.
Vista includes such new features as desktop search and a new user interface, which also are two areas that leave room for expansion in Windows 7, analysts said.
Microsoft has shown the direction it’s going with the latter with its Surface computer, introduced in late May. That form factor looks like a coffee table with a touchscreen interface that lets users move photos around by hand and synchronize devices by placing them on the table.
With products like the Apple iPhone making the touchscreen popular with consumers, a touchscreen UI in Windows 7 is a possibility, Silver said. “They don’t want to look bad next to Apple,” he said.
Desktop search, a new feature built into Vista, also has room for improvement. Microsoft has said it will link desktop search to Windows Server 2008 so desktop users can search not only for local files but also for files on the server. This is a feature that potentially could be built into the desktop OS.

“Many of the newest Windows games will take full advantage of the next-generation graphics technology in Windows Vista called DirectX 10.” says Microsoft. Gamers(mostly) don’t care what is behind the all hyped up DirectX 10. They care about the power it gives and the new feel it gives. And sorry to say, DX10 is not upto the mark.Wondering why?
DX10 will only run on systems which have Windows Vista and a fairly high-end graphics card. Developers are really thinking whether to use DX10 considering the slow upgrades by users to Vista.
The upcoming games : Call of Juarez, Lost Planet and Company of heroes have the same kind of the DX9 feel with extra graphical improvements and some new features. Crave even ran a DX10 machine and DX9 machine side by side and it was nearly impossible to detect differences.
Don’t be sad that you just upgraded to Vista hoping to see some real game experience. Wait for more titles(more like kind hearted Devs) before you throw that machine to dogs.

Everybody’s favorite open-source browser, Firefox, is great right out of the box. And by adding some of the awesome extensions available out there, the browser just gets better and better.
But look under the hood, and there are a bunch of hidden (and some not-so-secret) tips and tricks available that will crank Firefox up and pimp your browser. Make it faster, cooler, more efficient. Get to be a Jedi master with the following cool Firefox tricks.
1) More screen space. Make your icons small. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and check the “Use small icons” box.
2) Smart keywords. If there’s a search you use a lot (let’s say IMDB.com’s people search), this is an awesome tool that not many people use. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (let’s say “actor”) and save it. Now, when you want to do an actor search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “actor” and the name of the actor and press return. Instant search! You can do this with any search box.
3) Keyboard shortcuts. This is where you become a real Jedi. It just takes a little while to learn these, but once you do, your browsing will be super fast. Here are some of the most common (and my personal favs):
Spacebar (page down)
Shift-Spacebar (page up)
Ctrl+F (find)
Alt-N (find next)
Ctrl+D (bookmark page)
Ctrl+T (new tab)
Ctrl+K (go to search box)
Ctrl+L (go to address bar)
Ctrl+= (increase text size)
Ctrl+- (decrease text size)
Ctrl-W (close tab)
F5 (reload)
Alt-Home (go to home page)
4) Auto-complete. This is another keyboard shortcut, but it’s not commonly known and very useful. Go to the address bar (Control-L) and type the name of the site without the “www” or the “.com”. Let’s say “google”. Then press Control-Enter, and it will automatically fill in the “www” and the “.com” and take you there - like magic! For .net addresses, press Shift-Enter, and for .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter.
5) Tab navigation. Instead of using the mouse to select different tabs that you have open, use the keyboard. Here are the shortcuts:
Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs)
Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab)
Ctrl+1-9 (choose a number to jump to a specific tab)
6) Mouse shortcuts. Sometimes you’re already using your mouse and it’s easier to use a mouse shortcut than to go back to the keyboard. Master these cool ones:
Middle click on link (opens in new tab)
Shift-scroll down (previous page)
Shift-scroll up (next page)
Ctrl-scroll up (decrease text size)
Ctrl-scroll down (increase text size)
Middle click on a tab (closes tab)
7) Delete items from address bar history. Firefox’s ability to automatically show previous URLs you’ve visited, as you type, in the address bar’s drop-down history menu is very cool. But sometimes you just don’t want those URLs to show up (I won’t ask why). Go to the address bar (Ctrl-L), start typing an address, and the drop-down menu will appear with the URLs of pages you’ve visited with those letters in them. Use the down-arrow to go down to an address you want to delete, and press the Delete key to make it disappear.
User chrome. If you really want to trick out your Firefox, you’ll want to create a UserChrome.css file and customize your browser. It’s a bit complicated to get into here, but check out this tutorial.
9) Create a user.js file. Another way to customize Firefox, creating a user.js file can really speed up your browsing. You’ll need to create a text file named user.js in your profile folder (see this to find out where the profile folder is) and see this example user.js file that you can modify. Created by techlifeweb.com, this example explains some of the things you can do in its comments.
10) about:config. The true power user’s tool, about.config isn’t something to mess with if you don’t know what a setting does. You can get to the main configuration screen by putting about:config in the browser’s address bar. See Mozillazine’s about:config tips and screenshots.11) Add a keyword for a bookmark. Go to your bookmarks much faster by giving them keywords. Right-click the bookmark and then select Properties. Put a short keyword in the keyword field, save it, and now you can type that keyword in the address bar and it will go to that bookmark.
12) Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dialup connections). Here’s how:
Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.
Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
13) Limit RAM usage. If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us. Again, go to about:config, filter “browser.cache” and select “browser.cache.disk.capacity”. It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.
14) Reduce RAM usage further for when Firefox is minimized. This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so it’s definitely worth a go. Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean. Name it “config.trim_on_minimize” and set it to TRUE. You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.
15) Move or remove the close tab button. Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefox’s tabs? You can move them or remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for “browser.tabs.closeButtons”. Here are the meanings of each value:
0: Display a close button on the active tab only
1:(Default) Display close buttons on all tabs
2:Don’t display any close buttons
3:Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)

THE MISSING LINKOnce upon a midnight dreary, while pondering work for a meeting the next day, you decide you've had enough of your desk. Henceforth, you declare, you'll work anywhere in your house your heart desires: the sofa, the bedroom, the backyard, the kitchen, the bathroom (well, maybe not the bathroom). So you buy a wireless laptop, install a wireless router, and after you check that it all works, give yourself a pat on the back. The next day you discover that your wireless network covers only half your house and that both your living room and your kitchen are shrouded in digital darkness. The package the router came in claims a range of up to 250 feet, but your Wi-Fi signal barely seems to penetrate into the next room. You return the router for a new one, only to discover that the replacement unit leaves you with the same dreadfully cramped coverage area. Condemned once again to spend your most productive hours at the desperate solitude of your desk, you acquiesce, take a seat, and start typing.
Insufficient range is a common problem for many wireless networks, but there are ways to extend your coverage area into the places you need it most.
1. Center your router.
A vertical antenna and its radiation pattern.Setting up a wireless network is like investing in real estate: it's all about location. Unfortunately, it's hard to know exactly what your coverage area will be before you install the equipment. Transmission power, antenna sensitivity, and environmental conditions such as walls and furniture all help shape your coverage area. Moreover, the router alone is not responsible for your range. Your computer's wireless adapter must also be able to transmit data to the router. An ultrapowerful router with a sensitive antenna transmitting at 1 watt does you little good if your adapter has a poor antenna and is kicking out only 30 milliwatts. Replacing your router will often do nothing to improve your range.
If possible, place your wireless router in the center of the area you wish to cover. The omnidirectional antennas on most routers radiate in a three-dimensional doughnut-shaped pattern around the pole. If your router is located in a corner of your house, much of that radiation pattern will fall outside your home. Also, consider mounting your router high on a wall or ceiling far away from furniture and shelving that can impede or block Wi-Fi signals.
2. Add antennas or repeaters.
Buffalo's router repeater kit comes preconfigured out of the box. Some wireless adapters and routers are equipped with a connector that lets you add a high-gain antenna. High-gain antennas focus the energy they radiate in a particular direction, and you can use them to extend your range into rooms where your wireless signal otherwise might not reach. This solution works best when high-gain antennas are added to both sides of the connection.
You can also use a wireless repeater to extend your range. Repeaters receive data packets and retransmit them at full power. Unfortunately, this double duty of receiving and transmitting each individual packet cuts the throughput of your network connection in half. Repeaters can also be difficult to install, especially if you're new to networking. To make it easier, Buffalo sells a router/repeater combo that comes preconfigured out of the box. Keep in mind that repeaters tend to rely on proprietary solutions that are vendor specific and work only when you use the same brand of router and repeater. Still, a repeater can significantly increase the range of your wireless network and is well worth considering if you want to add a few rooms to your coverage area.

Don't bust the budget A dream machine can have many incarnations, depending on how much money you truly are able to put into it. At some point along the configuration process, you’re going to ask yourself the question, “Do I really need this particular item in my machine?” It can be a high-end video card, HD-ready display, etc. The first thing you need to decide on is essentials. You should write (or type) the absolute must-haves for your machine. This list will differ with everyone, depending on what you’ll be using the computer for. After the essentials are done, then you can start thinking about spending that extra buck on a component that may be a bit frivolous, but you can’t live without it.
Bottom Line: Have a budget and a dollar figure that you won’t go over by more than a few bucks.
Choosing components
The best advice I can give is to choose your components based on a couple things. First, if you have had past experience with a particular brand, whether positive or negative, that should factor into your decision-making process every time you are shopping around again. If you have had nothing but wonderful experiences with ASUS motherboards or Nvidia video cards, that’s obviously going to influence your decision, and that’s perfectly fine. The same goes for negative experiences.
Second, it is essential that you read reviews of products you are interested in. Just because a company has made well-reviewed and popular products in the past, that doesn’t mean they are infallible. Make sure you read reviews from both tech professionals and consumers for the exact product you are looking to purchase. Also, make sure the components you buy complement each other.
For example, if you are planning on taking advantage of SLI [to boost your machine's graphic processing], you want an SLI-capable motherboard. If you are planning on a nice digital speaker system, make sure that your sound, whether it’s integrated or dedicated, has an S/PDIF input.Bottom line: You want components in your Dream PC to operate as if they were built to do so seamlessly.

It's important to know how not to get hacked. The following details the layers of security you can place on your wireless network, as well as the effectiveness of each layer.
In some ways, securing a network is like the security on your home:
1.Leave the front door wide open. Seen by curious honest people and criminals alike as an open invitation to enter. See, it even says ‘Welcome’ on the doormat!
2.Shut the front door. This will keep out an honest person, but a crook wouldn’t be deterred, as they’ll walk right up and try the handle.
3.Lock the front door. This will again keep out the opportunist thief who will only try the door handle or climb in open a window to see if he can get it. Luckily most criminals fall into this category, so lock your door!
4.Bolt the door with deadbolts, bars on the windows, and alarms. It takes a lot more to keep out the determined criminal who, with a little equipment and know-how, might pick the lock, disable your alarm, or break your whole door down!
Wireless security falls into the same categories:
Leaving the door open: an open invitation
1.Broadcasting a default SSID
2.No MAC filtering
3.No encryption
4.DHCP switched on/No access controls
Shutting the door:
1.Changing the SSID (the name) of your network and disabling SSID broadcast. The determined hacker can discover this, so it merely protects you from the opportunist who’s in a hurry.
2.Disabling DHCP/Access Control. This will not stop a hacker with even minimal knowledge, as there are many tools which will sniff out available IP addresses on your network
3.MAC address filtering. A hacker with only a little know-how will be able to clone your MAC address--and see everything you see on your network.
Locking the door
1.WEP: Wireless Encryption Protocol can be hacked in seconds using free tools that are widely available.
Bolting the door
1.WPA: A randomized pre-shared key of at least 10 characters would take half-a-million years to crack. More info about this here. (Note: A random key means that it shouldn’t be a word that exists in any dictionary (hackers have extensive dictionaries that include all common passwords, English words, nicknames, and misspellings of words. This is called a “dictionary attack.”) A random key is a meaningless mix of lower- and uppercase letters and numbers, and sometimes special characters like punctuation, depending on whether your router supports it). If you’re not sure how to get a random key, you can generate a simple WPA key online on my Web site or a more complex one here. You can also get software that will generate a key for you (type “software generate wpa key” into your favorite search engine).
It’s best to build up each type of security in layers, checking that all devices can connect and communicate at each step before adding another layer. Make sure you read your router’s manual to ensure you’re storing the settings correctly (some routers require you to save the settings each time you make a change or the changes will be lost).

1. The types of connections needed are usually the most important factor when choosing any home-theater equipment. You might find it useful to write down the connectors you have on your home-theater gear so you can’t forget when you’re shopping. Perhaps more important, keep in mind the connections on the gear you’re hoping to buy in the future.
2. What ‘HD Ready’ means: “HD Ready” isn’t an official term, but it’s not really a lot of sales bull, either. It does, however, mean that no tuner is included with the TV.
3. Concerned that images will appear fuzzy as screen size increases? Don’t forget that high-def images let you sit closer to the screen. [The resolution is higher, so images remain in sharp focus.]
4. You’ll definitely want a digital/high-def cable box. You’ll want connections to handle every programming source you currently have and every source you think you’ll eventually want.
5. There’s no such thing as having too many inputs.
New TV sets are required to include ATSC tuners and should be able to receive HDTV signals if they’re in a good signal location and have a good antenna.
6. Over-the-air digital broadcasts: You should currently have digital broadcasts available over the air. Check AntennaWeb.org to see what programming is available in your area.

The Audigy might claim to do 24Bit/96KHz audio playback, and flaunt a 100dB Signal-to-Noise ratio, or even go to the extent of adding a "Firewire" port to your machine, but its expensive! That product is still priced a little too high to be considered by anyone but hardcore (and rich!) gamers,
